Assignment #2 – Exploring an Issue
“Designer Humans”
Recent breakthroughs in biotechnology have brought the prospects of genetically engineering human beings much close to reality. ... Designing humans is basically genetically altering the blueprint of an embryo by adding, removing or varying a few specific genes. The desired result of this technology is that many diseases caused due to defected genes that are passed on in generations can be corrected and healthier humans can be “created”. But ethicists argue that the use of this technology will not stop at curing diseases but will instead go on to the extent of designing humans to specific desired traits and characteristics. ... On the other hand, ethicists argue that parents will come to such “designing centers” and ask for “super-bred designer” children. This issue of weather to allow the research and experiments on genetically altering humans might soon be the topic for one of the biggest debates. ... They say that these designer babies will snatch off the entire emotional happiness in the natural birth of a baby. ... For the past thousands of years, humans have excelled in numerous fields and disciplines and have invented a countless number of things. ... The next step in evolution might as well be genetically engineered humans. ... The same is the case with designer humans, say the proponents. ... Humans have always advanced, never gone backwards and there it’s evident that these advances have benefited the society. ... Humans are the controllers of their own fate. Altering humans is incorrectly labeled as “messing with mother nature”. ... President Clinton in 1999 had banned the use of federal funds for research on “designer babies” and “clones”. ...
Then the ethicists argue that designer babies might become a business for many people. ... Another point they bring up is that it might lead to Humans Cloning. ... These are the arguments which imply that the negativities in designing humans outweigh any benefits there might be.
