***"third day of rain"~ Three is a big biblical reference: most things come in threes and the big events like resurrection occur after three days. ***crabs and dying child~ plague references, reminiscent of Biblical plagues ***old man in mud as an angel~ This is strange because of the glorious images most people think of in reference to angels. Angels do not usually appear covered in filth and much less old. This angel does not seem as powerful as we assume angels to be. Also, he's smack in the mud... fallen. This might explain his appearance in the mud, but opens up an entirely different set of questions. Is he fallen due to physical decay, moral decay, or both? The final phrase of the first paragraph is important too, "impeded by his enormous wings." The wings, which symbolize his supernatural nature, are the center of his troubles. He can't escape, he can't blend in. ***"He must have been coming for the child"~ That quote could be used to parallel the annunciation.
