School vouchers and school of choice are two similar subjects that can be closely related. A school voucher gives the parents the option to send their child to a private school and receive state funding for part of the tuition cost. With school of choice, a parent can send their child to a different public school than the school that he would normally be in the district of. I have chosen to focus my paper on school vouchers because prior to this paper I had never heard of them. ... The individuals in favor of school vouchers are people like Milton Friedman, who first introduced the idea of school vouchers, Dick DeVos and Steve Forbes. ... Individuals against school vouchers are the teachers unions, AFL-CIO affiliates and certain Democratic Party members.
More specific, school vouchers, in Michigan, would allow parents of children in districts that are said to be failing because less than two-thirds of the ninth graders graduate from high school, send their children to a private school. ... The parents that did decide to send their child to a private school would be stuck to pick up the rest of the bill. This limits this option to the wealthy kids who can afford the luxury of attending a better school. Leaving the “waste” to attend an unfunded, second rate school. ... Even with the voucher that the parents would receive, they would still be stuck with the several thousand dollar cost to send their child to the private school. Private schools also can select and choose who can attend their school. ... Due to this, all the “dumb” and special needs children would be forced to attend a run down public school, receiving a second rate education behind a more funded and prominent private school.
