Edward Abbey and Henry David Thoreau were at one time good friends or at least acquaintances. Though these two men do not agree on many things to many different levels, they are both in the end wanting very similar things. This also applies to all of the writers we have recently read, for they are all focused on preserving wildlife and even trying to heal the earth in one way or another. Abbey, Thoreau, Childs, Berg, and Noss all ultimately want to accomplish similar things. I only wish that there were more people like these men who held such passion for nature so that one day we might actually achieve something or at least begin something that will end with a greater and less fractured environment. I was incredibly moved by Childs experience with water. It was as though he went out to scientifically search the potholes and ways of water in the desert, but ended up with much more than just data. The water began to not only run but now was alive and speaking. I know that many people have felt this life from the water, the trees, the mountains, even the grass, yet they ignore itfs nagging at their hearts because this is a hard thing to believe in and accept. The water is the most powerful aspect of our lives. Many other elements of nature are very important, but without water all beings of life would cease to exist. Childs has made a very powerful discovery within himself that I know I hope to achieve someday. I am amazed by the voices I hear in the water, because as Childs said gThe voices in water are real, for whatever they might mean.h Thoreau, Abbey, Berg, and Noss are speaking of this same connection, yet they use less detail.
