Nietzsche and Self-Improvement 1) REVIEW a) Modern morality is different from other types. b) Modern morality tends to be narrow-minded and punishing. c) Will to Power as a new interpretive principle. d) Modern danger: the Last Man (Z P5). 2) NEW DIRECTIONS a) Life enhancement through exploring different talents, experimenting with creative types of value. “Give birth to a dancing star” (Z P5). b) Dedication to values that really exhibit our talents (and around which others may accumulate), but not trying to be perfect: have a center and a periphery (Z P4, SE 2). c) The Overman. We need to “surpass” the mere human (Z P3), and try to realize a new ideal: the Overman (Z3). True human beings do not yet exist on a widespread scale – if anything, most people have been made clever enough to pursue what animals do, but just consciously (SE 5). 3) SCHOPENHAUER AS EDUCATOR a) Most of us are too lazy and afraid to do anything to raise ourselves up to our higher selves, even though we have a sense we have a higher calling. b) Many universities and so-called teachers are mediocre, or care more about furthering the institution than really teaching you how to be a great human being; morality and virtue is just formulaic, something old-fashioned that scholars no longer need to exhibit (SE 2).
