Australian Music
Aboriginal Music –
Music is an important Aboriginal life. It is through music, both song and dance, that the Aborigines learn about their relationship to the land – their environment and how to live in it, their culture and customs- and the way their world was created – the Dreamtime.
Aboriginal ceremonies that combine song and dance are called corroborees - derived from the Aboriginal word ‘carib-berie’ which meant ‘dance’ in the language of one of the New South Wales Aboriginal tribes. ...
Other Aboriginal tribes have their own dialect name for the corroboree (bora) and each tribe has its own individual dances, songs, singing style and accompaniments. The areas which had the highest number of Aborigines (far north Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia) produced music with the most diversity.
Corroborees are important in the Aboriginal culture and lifestyle as it is through these song and dance ceremonies that all important events are celebrated – fertility, birth, death, mourning, initiation and the contact the Aborigines have with their ancestors and the supernatural.
