Whale Rider, is a story of love, rejection and triumph. A young maori girl fights to fulfill her destiny. In every generation for more than 1,000 years, the first-born male to the Chief succeeds to the title. Porourangi, the eldest son of Chief Koro, fathers twins- a boy and a girl. During birth the mother and baby boy die, leaving the girl, who is then named Pai. Koro, Pai’s grandfather, who is blinded by prejudice, refuses to acknowledge Pai as the inheritor of the tradition. As Pai turns 12, Koro assembles a school for boys to teach them the ancient chants, tribal lore, and warrior techniques, in hopes that the future leader of their tribe will be revealed to him. Although Pai was banned from these teachings, it doesn’t stop her from trying to prove herself to her grandfather. Through Pai’s bravery and determination, she assumes a role historically reserved for males, and wins her grandfathers acceptance. As one movie critic would put it, “This movie was inspirational in the same light as films such as Rudy and Remember the Titans.
