Detached Garage Section A – Planning 1a Possible causes of inconvenience to occupiers and neighbours include; Hazards and/or restricted access to property due to works Hazards and/or restricted access to property due to poor skip placement Disruption to electricity supply Contractor vehicle parking Noise from work site Storage of materials Note: To help identify the above a full assessment should be carried out before the contract starts. 1b To minimise the identified problems the following measures can be implemented; Inform client and immediate neighbours of intended type and duration of work and daily start and finish times Ensure all materials, tools and contractor vehicles do not cause any obstruction during works Sensible use of barriers at site to restrict entry to possible hazardous areas Signage stating “Caution Men at Work” at the isolated supply and “Danger Live Apparatus” at adjacent live apparatus Liase with local council or skip Hire Company – whichever is appropriate - on skip placement and conditions of use. Adhere to any recommendations Inform client when disruption to electricity supply is expected to occur Identify location and number of parking spaces available and park in designated area only and do not exceed maximum number of vehicles Avoid any unnecessary noise and keep necessary noise to a minimum. Only work during stated working hours Identify storage area with client and store materials, tools etc in designated area only 1c Possible consequences if suitable planning and precautions are not undertaken may include; Injury to client or public Damage to clients or adjacent property Damage to clients or public possessions Inconvenience to client or public Loss, theft, or damage to contractors materials, tools and vehicles Injury to contractors Escalating costs Misinterpretation of exact work requirements Delay in start / completion of work. Penalty clauses coming into effect Bad feeling between client and contractor 2 Action to be taken to prevent unauthorised access to worksite could include the following; Barriers and gating to work site Signage stating “authorised access only” 3 The four key issues to be raised to a NICEIC technical officer relating to bonding requirements for the garage door would be; 1. Do you need to bond the garage door to the frame? 2. If so, how should the bonding be fixed to the frame and door? 3. What is the minimum size, type and colour of conductor? Should it be labelled ‘safety electrical connection. Do not remove’? 4. Do you need to return the earth back to the consumer unit? 4 Total length of cable required to complete lighting circuit using a 3 plate wiring system would be; 1mm 6242Y Cable required would be approx 24.1metres (to 1dp) including 5% for terminations 1mm 6243Y Cable required would be approx 7.0metres (to 1dp) including 5% for terminations see attached diagram for cable routing Section B – Site Administration 5a The following actions could be used to deal with the neighbours’ complaint regarding the skip; When dealing with the neighbour always be courteous and avoid argument, talking down to the neighbour, any “display of cleverness” and impatience Show sympathy with the neighbour, realising that they would not have gone to the trouble to complain if it was not a genuine problem to them Establish the facts; learn exactly what the problem is.
