How does the author of the following extracts use language to convey changes and contrasts in mood and meaning The extract appears to be one of tragedy and sadness. The author has started out describing a beautiful and serene town, which has a natural unspoilt quality. This may have been the case at one point but she goes on to say that this seemingly perfect town was struck by an 'evil spell' causing sudden deaths and sickness throughout. To add to the feeling of gloom and despair she quite clearly states that this fate does not discriminate, it has caused deaths amongst many animals as well as adults, and even to the innocent, the children of the town. The beautiful and serene town that I mentioned is described in the first two paragraphs.
