To examine the challenges of Aboriginal people it is necessary to first ask what a challenge is. ... Aboriginal people have certainly met a huge number of these, from an individual level right through to difficulties faced by the entire race. From the arrival of Europeans late in the eighteenth century the treatment of Aboriginals as a whole has been appalling. It was the view of most white European people for many years that their race was superior to the Aboriginal race. ... The nineteenth century brought further persecution of the people. ... This was another example of the uncaring attitude towards Aborigines of the government which continued well into the twentieth century.
At the turn of the twentieth century the attitude of white people toward Aboriginals seemed to have transformed into a paternalistic type view. “Policies were pursued, often with the best of intentions, but almost invariably with paternalism, with a "nanny-state" mentality of giving people what was best for them, with the recipients given no control, no say over things that had a profound impact on their lives. ... Aboriginal people had a huge lack of representation on these boards, none of them contained a single Aboriginal. ... ”
The Aboriginal Protection Boards of the twentieth century had no regard for the people whom they were supposed to be protecting, in actual fact their main objective was to keep Aborigines out of the way of Europeans. ... This unjust approach barely differed from much of Aboriginal life throughout the century.
The removal of children from Aboriginal homes from the beginning of the 1900s until towards the late 1970s was one of the great atrocities performed by the white people of the time. ... They justified the removal of the children in their own minds normally by inventing situations of neglect or abuse by Aboriginal parents. Looking in hindsight, people wonder today how the government could possibly have seen that it was acting in children’s best interests. ... They suffer great confusion and will often have difficulty identifying with their culture, and discovering themselves, in Aboriginal culture this effect is magnified enormously. Strong links to their immediate and extended families are very prominent in Aboriginal society.
