Gender Situation Men and women are equals, no question, but that does not mean they are the same. Women who attend sporting events are treated and act significantly different than males who attend or participate in sporting events. On the days I observed the recreation-sporting event, women were very quiet and calm, whereas men were loud and obnoxious. Women were given a hard time for cheering on the sidelines. Men took the macho approach and yelled and whistled at these women. There was a lot of feminine and masculine contact between the basketball players. Gender plays a huge role in what sports adolescents choose to be involved in. Girls choose sports involving less contact, boys enjoy sports with vigorous activity and lots of physical contact. Football, soccer, baseball, and wrestling are the sports in the United States with the most participation from boys. Volleyball, field hockey and softball tend to be the popular sports for girls. Track and basketball receive interest from both males and females. In the United States even in early childhood boys like to be involved in aggressive activities. Girls find it more enjoyable playing with dolls and less competitive situations. I observed the interaction between men and women at Sport ETC INC. on Tuesday, October 14 from 3:30 to 5:45 p.m. Sports ETC INC is a large, recreational center on Country Fair Drive in Champaign where men, women, and children come to relax and enjoy recreational activities. There were fifteen to twenty people at the center when I visited: ten women and the rest men. Women in the crowd were more laid back. The men were yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs. At one end of the basketball court an adult male got out of his seat and yelled in the referees face about a call he made.
