Congress passed many restriction acts against immigration, such as the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, or the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924. Congress passed these acts to limit the amount of people in this country. Also, they passed the Chinese Exclusion Act because a great deal of anti-Chinese sentiment arose in California, partly because the growing American labor force had to compete with cheap Chinese labor and partly because many Americans were opposed to further immigration by what they considered to be an inferior people. I think Congress acted honorably because a lot of tension was created by the people and since the Civil War had ended less than 20 years ago they didn’t want to start another war.
