Assignment Unit 5:
Health, Social Care & Early Years Services.
I have chosen to investigate a Day Care Centre that I have been aware of nearly all my life, but never known the full purpose of. The Stour View Centre in Sturminster Newton, North Dorset, has been an up and running statutory Day Care Centre caring for a variety of vulnerable adults since February 1996.
There are three types of care organisations; statutory, voluntary and private. ... Statutory organisations are funded by the government and the services provided are set up by an Act of Parliament; they have a legal duty to provide these services for free at point of delivery, excluding a few services like lunch. ... Voluntary organisations or charities are set up to provide care to people who need it. ... The services provided cost money so the organisations make their money from charging their patients/clients. Examples: Private Hospitals, Private Care Homes.
The standards of care for the statutory, voluntary and private organisations must be up to the same standards set by the law. It is the job of independent inspecting organisations to ensure all care settings are meeting the National Minimum Standards (NMS) issued by the Department of Health. ...
The demand for Day Care Centres in the area of North Dorset is high as there is a large population of older people; North Dorset has the second highest percent of older people in the Country. There is also a lack of organisations that care for people with learning and physical disabilities and people with sensory loss. ...
I have some facts and figures from the local County Council’s website to illustrate the need there is for Day Care Centres in the area of North Dorset. ... People used to live until 60 or 70, now people are living up to 85 years and over. ... This increased demand for help means there is a greater need for Day Care Centres in every community.
Years ago when a child was born with a disability there was a chance that that child could survive, but many did not. ...
The situation for care organisations is changing and will change a lot more due to the increase in people needing care.
The Stour View Centre gets all its referrals from the local Social Services; they use professional referral methods. ... This is because there are not many places that care for people with disabilities in the area.
Anyone can contact Social Services if they are concerned about someone; this method is called third party referral. ... Once Social Services has been made aware that Mrs. Baxter is in need of support a Care Plan is produced that aims to help her individual needs, this may include attending Stour View Centre. ...
Organisational barriers
• The only way one gets a place at the Stour View Centre is through the Social Services. This may cause problems for people unaware of this; if someone goes into the Stour View Centre asking if they can join then they would be sent over to the Social Service building that happens to be across the car park from the Stour View Centre.
