One evening, Nancy and her two friends Bess and George were jogging in the park with many other young people. After a couple of minutes they were separated and Nancy found herself jogging next to a mysterious figure. Then the strange person gave her a note. It said that Nancy should find them in the empty barn with the flaming horse on it. It was signed the family ghost. She asked the ghost jogger who they were. Suddenly the ghost ran off. Nancy could not find him. She ran home like her hair was on fire. When she got home he told her housekeeper, Hannah Gruen, what had just happened. Then Hannah informed Nancy of the news report about two young children who are missing. Nancy wonders if the kidnapping could have anything to do with that note she received from the “family ghost”.
