If passed the bill would make it illegal to smoke in and within 20 feet of all public and private schools, airports, libraries, hospitals, and indoor shopping malls. The bill would also make it illegal to smoke in sporting arenas, concert halls, taxis, busses, and all restaurants. The bill would permit smoking in bars, fraternal organizations buildings and bowling alleys.
Senate bill #1283 was passed in the senate on Friday February 15th with a vote of 22 to 13. The bill then went to the House. Republican Representative Ken Roberts of Donnelly tried to persuade members to change the bill to also exempt restaurants that have a liquor license. ... After a long debate in the house, the bill was passed on Wednesday March 15th with a vote of 44 to 26. The bill now goes to Governor Dirk Kempthorne and if he accepts the bill it will go into effect July 1st. If the Governor veto’s the bill it will be sent back to the House and Senate with a list of complaints. The bill can either be passed with a 2/3 majority vote in both the House and Senate or amended and sent back to the Governor once again. ...
Opposes of the bill say if the bill were to be passed, not being allowed to smoke in a public place is taking away the right to choose from smokers.
