How would you feel if your life was full of beatings for basically no apparent reason? What if you woke up in the morning and just prayed that you would get through the day without any suffering? Well, this is what the main character of Summer of My German Soldier, Patty Bergen, calls life. Throughout the story, Patty entails much hardship due to the physical stress she endures. The first time Patty gets beaten is because she DID do something wrong. Patty and her black neighbor, Freddy Dowd, were playing a game called “hit the hubcap” with each other one day. Hit the hubcap is a game where you try and hit nearby car’s hubcaps with stones.
