Manufacturing is the ease of fabrication and/or assembly which is important for cost, productivity and quality.
Manufacturability is the “process of proactively designing products to optimize all the manufacturing functions: fabrication, assembly, test, procurement, shipping, delivery, service, and repair, and assure the best cost, quality, reliability, regulatory compliance, safety, time-to-market, and customer satisfaction. ... If the designers do not understand the manufacturing process, the product will either not fit the design intention or will take a lot longer to make because of ongoing revisions which will directly affect cost and productivity. There now are many manufacturers that employ their designers first in the manufacturing department/factory floor before going to the design department.
