Europe witnessed a great rise in nationalism, particularly in Germany and Italy, in the 19th century. This rise in nationalism initiated a need and desire for unification. However, the monarchs that had been in rule for centuries, the Catholic church and upper classes, scrutinized unification as a way of lessening their power and supremacy. Excommunication and combat were used by the opposition, ineffectively, as an attempt to curb unification. ... The political, diplomatic and military skill of Otto von Bismarck and Camillo di Cavour were critical in creating the unified Germany and Italy.
The rulers of Germany and Italy each approached unification in very different way. At first, Italy didn’t have one main ruler, but two people and a concept, which resulted in a different approach to the unification process.
