... In Sophocless Oedipus the King, Oedipus feared that a certain prophecy would come true, and that he was doomed. ... Oedipus feared that he was destined to couple with his mother and kill his own father, but his desire to avoid this prophecy led him to believe that he could avoid it because he knew something about it and could try to prevent it. Oedipus would later realize that his efforts to prevent the prophecy from fulfilling itself were futile; in fact what he did to avoid the prophecy ironically made it come true.
