Wal-Mart is mean, destructive, unethical, and now I has moved to Canada. Wal-Mart, like many other American retail buisnesses has not only moved into Canadian retail, but has taken over and forced many chain stores to shut down. Wal-Mart, an American company, was brought to Canada in 1994, and took over 122 Woolco stores. Being one of the most powerful stores, Wal-Mart has been able to demolish its competition and offer customers what they want at low prices. Wal-Mart has not only moved into Canada, but it has become known worldwide. It has opened the International market with stores in Mexico City in 1991, and Puerto Rico in 1992. During the years of 1994-2002, Wal-Mart moved into Hong Kong, China, and Korea. This move caused Wertkauf and Interspar stores in Germany and stores in the UK to close. By 2002, Wal-Mart opened 1,852 Wal-Mart stores, 564 Sam’s Clubs, 1,277 Super centers, 32 Neighborhood Markets, 244 ASDA stores, and 443 stores and restaurants in Mexico. Wal-Mart employs nearly 1.4 million people worldwide and has sales of $350 billion dollars. The question remains then, what makes Wal-Mart so successful over other Canadian companies? Wal-Mart has figured out that today’s customers want low prices, a large selection and fast reliable service. Wal-Mart isn’t like normal department stores which puts it ahead of the rest. Wal-Mart tries to make their store more appealing to customers, by carpeting its apparel departments and none of their prices end in nine. Wal-Mart has been able to figure out how businesses operate and how consumers think, and have been able to manipulate both of these aspects. When Wal-Mart first came to Canada it created a lot of controversy. Many large retailers were afraid that they would be put out of business, just as many American companies had.
