What many people do not know is that the psychological aspect of sports can have an overwhelming affect on an athlete’s performance. A sports psychologist’s job is to prepare the mind of an athlete as thoroughly as one would physically. More and more athletes are realizing that successful sports performances cannot be reduced to only the physical aspect (Cady 1). Many athletes are beginning to turn to sports psychologists to help them compete better and to gain a better understanding of the sport they partake in.
Psychology is the study of the thought processes and behavior of humans in interaction with the environment. Psychologists study processes of sense perception, thinking, learning, cognition, emotions and motivations, personality, abnormal behavior, interactions between individuals, and interactions with the environment (“Columbia Encyclopedia” 1)
Just as a psychologist studies all these things, likewise, a sports psychologist studies them as they apply to the world of sports. However, unlike psychology sports psychology does not have such a long history. The first sports psychology lab did not even exist until well into the 1900’s. ...
