Somath Duong English 1 B Meryl Siegal Journal: The Rain God The Rain God by Arturo Islas is “A story of surprising sublety and poignancy. A lovely book pitting the spirit of Mexican American Life- faith and family and laughter and magic-against cold Puritanism of “making it” in the united states.” Islas exploration of Mexican American culture is marked by his poetic and narrative voice that speak to both traditions. The story takes place in a fictional small border town on the Texas-Mexico. It highlights the complexity of the Angel family by giving the reader accounts of funny, sad, and even outrageous accounts of the children and grandchildren of Mama Chona who is the matriarch of the Angel. Primarily taking place within the 1960’s, the story spans for 3 generations as Islas is able to take the reader on a journey of photographic snapshots highlighting important events in the Angel family.
