Catton’s main emphasize in A Stillness At Appomattox is that good leadership is vital to the success of any battle or event. He constantly gives examples of what happens when leaders do not take the initiative or the extra effort to thoroughly study key items that determine the outcome in a battle. Catton felt that a leader must set a good example and must not expect others to do what they themselves are not willing to do. They should strive to be competent, stay motivated and motivate others to fight their best. In page 104, the second full paragraph talks of how communication was not effective and therefore Washington was not readily prepared for the rebels.
