Evaluative Essay
The painting “Seminole Shawnee” by Benjamin Harjo is located on the main floor of the library, and is a good example of modern art. Modern art is a general term used to describe artistic production from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth. The characteristics of modern art can be seen in Harjo’s piece through various observations such as line, shape, subject matter, texture, and even general expression. Harjo’s painting will be discussed with relation to modern art by first looking at modern art in general; then by breaking up modern art into these specific categories: abstraction, modernism, and expression.
The basic underlying quality of modern art is its new approach. It sparked a generation of art where it was no longer critical to represent subject matter. ... Harjo’s modern art painting allows viewers to focus on areas that would be difficult to notice with a more prominently displayed subject. This aspect of the painting is very important in modern art. In modern art, the choice of materials (color, texture, depth, etc. ... While Harjo’s piece is modern art, it also fits into other more specific categories.
