This particular extract precedes the assembly of various Handmaids and wives for a celebration; Birth Day. The Handmaids had all rushed down by Birthmobile, to assemble at a common venue to witness the delivery of a baby of their fellow colleague, Ofwarren, also known as Janine. For the Handmaids, there are many emotions experienced. Most can concur to experiencing a sort of joy in the delight of the woman in labour who would no longer risk being considered an unwoman. On the other hand, emotions of jalousie, or accusatory notions do exist, as some envy having a child and while some accuse her acquiring the child in a controversial way. After this exert, the wives proceed to name the baby, and the women return to their normal routines In the exert itself, the final stage of Janine’s delivery is in progress and the Wives are beckoned for the observation of the final procedure. Through this first person account, several feelings regarding the way women felt in the society are depicted.
