Racism. It's almost impossible to turn on a news program, read a paper or magazine article, or engage in a political discussion without that word coming up at one time or another. Racial violence has many forms - from the hoods of the KKK to the shaved heads and swastikas of today's apostles of Hitler - but only one terrible voice. An article from the Chicago Tribune shows how a half black and half white woman, Emily Raboteau, survived in the harsh world. Living in a society filled with racial slurs, Emily was always considered to be an outcast. “With a black father and a white mother, she has encountered dirty looks in a Southern diner, rejection by some darker-skinned African-Americans, and a range of questions about her own identity, some exciting, some harrowing” (Schoenberg, 2001). Throughout her life, people question her about her racial identity and her ethnicity. She recalls one time when she was asked to paint herself, and she painted her whole body black.
