Tam O’Shanter Essay – English – Mrs Russell
“Tam O’Shanter” by Robert Burns is widely considered to be classic piece of literature and one of Burns’ masterpieces. ...
One of the things that makes “Tam O’Shanter” a classic poem is the various techniques used by Burns. One of the techniques used is the onomatopoeic word choice in the description of the horrendous storm Tam has to endure on his way back from the pub in Ayr. ... This undoubtedly is an excellent technique and is also great evidence that “Tam O’Shanter is a classic and excellent poem. ...
Another thing that makes “Tam O’Shanter” a classic poem is the three lessons imbedded in the poem. ... But he does not mean this at all:
“Whene’er to drink you are inclin’d,
Or cutty sarks run in your mind,
Think, ye may buy the joys o’er dear,
Remember Tam O’Shanter’s mare”
If Burns had been teaching a serious lesson, he would not have used the word may, he would have used a word like will or shall. ... In fact it would seem that he is criticising the church and all who co-inside with the church: “remember Tam O’Shanters mare”
This line of the poem shows that Burns believes the total opposite from the church, and that if you do not enjoy yourself and you follow the rules of the church all your life you may be the one who gets punished.
