Citizen Kane, a film that has been classed as the best ever to be made was directed by, Orson Welles. He produced his film cheaply by using clips from other films, therefore keeping the budget low. ... Welles and his team wanted to produce a film about one mans life, Kane, but they would have to do this in a way that was suitable for cinema. Therefore Citizen Kane was made by using a number of flashbacks from four different people who new Kane throughout his life, one of these being a successful banker called Thatcher.
Looking at the Thatcher memoirs of Kanes life there is a particular shot in which a large statue can be seen, this is a low angle shot which shows us even before we see his memoirs he is a powerful man as the audience is made to look up at him. The light behind the statue again shows this man had power, also Thatcher has been calved in stone therefore giving the impression he is a cold, hard and bitter man before we are even introduced to him. The camera then leads down to the next shot, this shows the base of the statue which has been marked with Walter Parks Thatcher. A bright light really highlights the word Thatcher again giving the sense of power. The statue is something for everyone to remember him by, he is a powerful man, and big statues and buildings represent high statuses, like Kane and Xanadoo.
The next shot shows Thomson from behind and in a darker light this is because he is just taking us through the story, he is not the main focus. ... There is also a woman in this scene who seems to be the protector of Thatcher’s chamber. ... This is the type of person expected to be guarding Thatcher, as a soft person would not be like his character. ... The large door is then opened the room looks like a prison cell and inside are Thatcher’s secrets, they are safe within these walls. The light beams straight down on the table and the memoirs can be seen glowing.
