The Kerner Report
Chapter 6 of our textbook deals with the topic of discrimination and its effects on the economy. ... ’s “I Have a Dream” speech, followed by a brief mention of the accuracy of President Lyndon Johnson’s Kerner Commission. I had never heard of the Kerner Commission, so that’s why I chose this topic.
Johnson charged the commission with analyzing the specific triggers for the riots, the deeper causes of the worsening racial climate of the time, and potential remedies.
The commission presented its findings in 1968, concluding that urban violence reflected the profound frustration of inner-city blacks and that racism was deeply embedded in American society.
