Marijuana: Good or Bad?
One question that has haunted Americans for a long time is: Should the use of marijuana be legalized? ... I believe the nature given plant would have many more positive effects than bad on our country today, if it were to be legalized. ... I believe that if it was went about properly, our nation could use the advantages of marijuana to greatly increase our economy and also play a factor in our national debt.
Marijuana is defined as a mixture of leaves, stems, and flowering tops of the Indian hemp plant Cannabis sativa, smoked or eaten for its hallucinogenic and pleasure giving effects. Owning marijuana was made a crime in 1937 when Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act. ... In my opinion, I think that legalizing the use of marijuana would have many medical benefits, economic benefits, and would decrease the incidence of crime in today’s crowded cities. ... These people feel that legalization would lead to the formation of other habits and to health problems, such as, the use of a harsher drugs and to psychological and personality problems that can come from using marijuana. These individuals feel that the negatives of marijuana use far outweigh the positives, and feel that the use of marijuana should remain illegal. ... Drawing a conclusion based entirely on my own experiences the side effects of marijuana are only minor compared to the positives that could come from the natural wonder. To some people marijuana is considered a “gateway” drug. They think legalizing marijuana would lead to the use of other, much harsher drugs. ... In an article based on a study from the American Medical Association it says that , “A team of researchers from the United States and Australia has found that the age when a person begins to smoke marijuana has a significant influence on whether they will develop problems with drugs and alcohol later in life, independent of his or her genetic and family background”(Buddy T).
