Breast augmentation has been a controversial topic in the past few years. From 1985 to late 1998, the FDA received 49,661 reports on negative reactions to saline-filled implants, including accounts of ruptures, deflations, scarring, and infection. ... People should take the risks associated with breast implants seriously. ... It is obvious that many surgeons will not inform their patients about the harsh realities of breast implants, but they will talk on and on about the benefits and their great “masterpieces”. Many women receive breast implants to duplicate the curvaceous female images portrayed by magazines, movies, and models. Although women with breast implants may look appealing on the outside, what is happening on the inside? Breast implants do not have a lifetime warranty. Even though saline-filled implants and silicone-filled implants are made of different chemicals, they have the same damaging effects. There are many disadvantages, risks, and side effects that occur when introducing alien objects such as breast implants into a woman’s body. Everyone has the right to be informed about the “dark side” of breast implants. ... Women’s main motivation for getting breast implants is to enhance their appearance and self-image, but most do not realize that the immediate side effects have the opposite effect. Many women receive breast implants to balance the breast size, correct breast volume after pregnancy, help lift a breast, or to make the breasts larger (Dowden). Most people agree that they like to look good and feel good about themselves, but getting breast implants is not the way to do it.
