Running head: NURSES ROLE IN PAIN MANAGEMENT
A Nurses Role in the Assessment
And Management of Pain
A Nurses Role in the Assessment
And Management of Pain
Introduction
While in a healthcare setting, it is important for the patient to have their symptoms due either to injury or illness well controlled. One of the most common symptoms experienced by the majority of patients is pain. Due to the large amount of time spent with a patient, the nurse plays a critical role in the assessment of the patient’s pain. ... To achieve optimal pain control, nurses must be able to understand the frequency of pain, management of pain and treatments that will provide the greatest relief.
Impact on Today’s World
Pain control is one of the most challenging tasks that nurses face when providing care for their patients. Pain is often overlooked or undertreated. ... Therefore, the nurse can most accurately identify a source of pain and address and treat the symptom. Being able to understand the manner in which the patient is experiencing pain is the first step in the approach to relieve it. The nurse should regularly assess the patient’s pain to maintain quality care. In 2000, American Nurse Association delegates, Karen Daley and Gwen Waddell-Shultz emphasized the importance of “nurses in all settings to assess and manage pain, along with temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure, consistent with the 1998 Tri-council decision to endorse the view of pain as the 5th vital sign”.
