In class today I introduced the Phaedo and I tried to focus our discussion of the text not on arguments for and against the immortality of the soul, but on other ideas that emerge from the reading: namely, the contrast Plato draws between the life devoted to the body and the life devoted to the soul or ones character (which he takes to be the life of philosophy). We looked at some key points in the text where this theme emerges, and well continue to do this throughout our coverage of the Phaedo.
The Phaedo opens with Socrates making a remark that pain seems to always go hand in hand with pleasure. ... In class we unpacked what he meant by this. ... We will pick this topic up next class.
Today in class we started with a review of the arguments Plato had given so far, advocating the life of the soul by pointing out problems with the body. ...
Plato uses the example of two sets of sticks (which I re-created in class with pieces of chalk).
