Since the 1960s the amount of cars driven on the Australian roads has increased multiple times, such has the amount of gaseous wastes produced which are being released into the atmosphere. To combat this, car manufacturers from around the world have been fitting metal catalyst like Platinum or Rhodium in their exhaust pipes. These catalysts speed up the conversion of Carbon Monoxide to Carbon Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxide to Nitrogen. This conversion is written as. 2CO(g) + 2NO(g) „_ 2CO2 (g) + N2 (g) There is a large number of reasons why the efficiency in conversions of waste emissions in car exhausts needed to be changed. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas which joins eagerly with haemoglobin, haemoglobin is a liquid in the blood which carries oxygen. When the haemoglobin is carrying the carbon monoxide, the haemoglobin cannot carry a ample amount of oxygen around the body, which leads to oxygen starvation of the tissue.
