The first time we are introduced to Walter is when Ms Caroline inspects everyones lunches to find Walter does not have one. She tries to lend Walter Cunningham a quarter to buy himself some lunch mfrom town. Walter refuses the money showing although he is poor, he is proud. Scout interferes by attempting to explain the Cunningham situation to the teacher, but she is unwilling to listen.
