The body of research documenting a high coincidence of
domestic violence and sexual abuse with other barriers among
women seeking services is growing. ... For example, Bennett and Lawson (1994) found that
42% of women receiving domestic violence services were dealing
with their own substance abuse issues and that 60% of females
dealing with their own substance abuse issues were victims of
domestic violence. ... In addition, female psychiatric
inpatients experienced adult sexual abuse and domestic violence
at rates of 38% and 56%, respectively (Jacobson & Richardson,
1987). Less is known about the prevalence of victimization
and other barriers women face, though researchers have demonstrated
a strong link between prostitution and sexual abuse
(Farley & Barkan, 1998). ... Research on mental health, sub-
stance abuse, and domestic violence has been conducted separately,
for the most part, with a primary focus on one or another
issue. During the 1990s, however, a substantial body of literature
grew that documented the links between substance abuse and
mental health issues and both of these issues with violence and
victimization.
