In John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn,” the beautiful truth of a person’s soul lives on for eternity through art. ... The urn’s life-span in the poem extends for eternity. Comparing the urn to a “foster child of… slow time”, Keats gives a metaphor for the significance of the urn’s long life (2). ... Furthermore, he uses another metaphor to compare the urn to a “Sylvan historian” (3). This comparison serves to show that the urn has already lasted for a long period of time before the speaker of the poem gazes upon it.
