Macbeth Vs The Great Gatsby

... Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”, shares many similarities with Shakespeare’s famous “Macbeth”. While Fitzgerald’s work is unique and very important, both the plot and themes explored in “Gatsby” are not unlike those in “Macbeth”.
In terms of plot, “The Great Gatsby” may appear worlds different from “Macbeth” on the surface. ... Both depict a young man with very high goals, Jay Gatsby’s quest for Daisy Buchanan’s heart and Macbeth’s quest for rule, and their struggles to achieve them. Although both enjoy a brief taste of their respective desires (Macbeth’s discontented Kingship and Daisy’s love for Gatsby in the last few chapters), they prove ephemeral as both men are soon killed. ... Macbeth kills Duncan and anyone he perceives as a threat to his Kingship and Gatsby uses bootlegging and crime to gain his fortune. Both characters also reach a very high standing, Gatsby living in grandiose riches and Macbeth a respected warrior, but are unable to be content. ...
Thematically, the two works also share great deal. One of the earliest themes expressed in Macbeth was his wife’s control over him. One could argue that it was Lady Macbeth’s influence that drove Macbeth to commit his dastardly deed.
