A Better Understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease is a disorder that destroys cells in the brain. This disease is the leading cause of dementia, a condition that involves gradual memory loss, the decline in the ability to perform normal tasks, disorientation, difficulty learning, and loss of language skills, impaired judgment and drastic personality changes. Dr. Alois Alzheimer first recognized this disease in 1906 while performing the autopsy of a woman with dementia. He described two kinds of abnormalities –amyloid plaques and neurofibfillary tangles. These abnormalities are still known as the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s. Since Dr. Alzheimer’s discovery researchers have learned much about how these structures form but they still do not know exactly what role they play in the loss of brain cells.
