As one ages, he/she experiences changes in all aspects of his/her life. These differences in physical health, psychological condition, and social interaction often relate and have an affect on each other. The movie “On Golden Pond” portrays this interdependence of the aspects of aging through the characters of Norman and Ethel Thayer. Norman Thayer exhibits many of the physical and psychological effects of aging. His memory is failing him and he has heart trouble. Some of the problems he has may be due to his outlook about aging. He seems to have a “fascination” with death and continually talks about being old. He ridicules Ethel when she says they are middle aged. He calls himself ancient. His negative attitude about his condition and getting older could contribute to his poor health. Ethel has a more positive outlook and is also healthier. This proves that one’s positive mental or emotional health could contribute to better physical health also. Better physical health can also contribute to more stable psychological health.
