ANALYSIS OF “CLOCKS” Introduction Pitch ----- Wide range. Based on whole tone scale and diminished chords. Consists of scalic and arpeggio runs. Texture ----- Thin textured opening that slowly develops into very dense texture from Bar 8. From Bar 8, music comes in sectional blocks. Instruments play in unison in last 3 bars. Duration ----- Mainly short note values. Cascading patterns over a pedal point. Short sharp string section interjections. Wall of sound is created from Bar 8. Dynamics and Expressive Techniques ----- Contrasting dynamics. Dynamics also create interest with use of whole tone scale notes. Tone Colour ----- Solo beginning adds individual colour. From Bar 8, blocks of instruments create a rumbling effect. A dark mood is also created. Structure ----- Repetition is well used and creates unity. There are 2 main themes, which include the cascading runs at the start followed by the block scalic runs from Bar 8. Part 1 Pitch ----- Very wide range of pitch. Melody is mostly scale like. Mainly upwards movement. Begins with little movement, apart from leaps used on tape. Texture ----- Very light textured opening with occasional percussion and string interjections. From Bar 8, texture is slightly thicker with longer string interjections. Strings and piano play in unison. Texture remains mainly transparent until the end approaches. Texture becomes heavy until the end. Some dissonance is used. Duration ----- Tempo is determined by the tape. Beat is very prominent. From Bar 29 to 39 there is a large section of accented quavers, which are played by all sections eventually. Notes are mainly short in value.
