When Katherine Mansfield’s “Her First Ball” is read it seems to be a straight forward story about a young girl’s first formal occasion in early twentieth century English society. ... the first ball was an occasion that was eagerly anticipated and its nearness made Leila excited; in fact it made the whole world come life. ... Here she was on her first adult outing but is still referred to as “my child” and “my little country cousin”. ... In fact the freedom of the ball itself was a reminder of other more severe times when “Miss Eccles (of London) held her ‘select classes’”. ... A few simple words leave the impression of a severe woman better forgotten about as Leila now enjoyed the excitement of the Ball as suggested by the graceful motion of the flower “tossed into the pool”.
