At 8:00 PM November 22, I went to auditorium in the Queensborough Community College to see a concert of symphonic band. The performing group was Queens Symphonic Band conducted by Jeffrey Hest. Auditorium was very large. It seems that the hall has a seating capacity of about one thousand, and approximately 70 percents of seats were occupied on that night. All performing members dressed black suit. However, Audience was in liberal atmosphere. As we look at the title, most repertoires that were performed on that night were composed by American musicians except Heitor Villa Lobos. And, the interesting was that Queensborough Symphonic band has no string player. Just one guy occasionally plucked acoustic bass in the back row. They played instruments of winds, brass, membranophones, and idiophones. The opening was begun with "The Free lance March" composed by John Philip Sousa (1854?1932). To most Americans the name of Sousa is synonymous with the Fourth of July. People throughout the world have been inspired by the rousing strains of the works of the "March King".
