... The impact of Alcohol abuse or “Alcoholism” on society is an extremely long list. Represented in this paper will be the effects of three of the ways that alcohol abuse impacts society.
Environmental factors, Medical factors, and economic factors are three of the most important factors when discussing the impact of alcohol abuse on society. Under the umbrella of environmental factors (causes/effects) there are many different categories such as: child abuse, poverty, poor nutrition, alcohol and other drug-abusing friends and relations, and extreme stress. As well as medical factors such as: Injuries caused by drunk drivers and FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.) As for the economic aspect: the costs arising from the different medical expenses, damages related to dui accidents, damages to places of business, the costs to run the clinics, as well as the impact on local taxes, costs, etc. ... This impacts society in such a way that it breeds users and abusers of all kinds, which in turn breeds more and the cycle continues. The following is a quote from a 19 -year-old recovering alcoholic, "When I was younger I was always surrounded by alcohol and drugs. ... " Alcoholism impacts society in other environmental areas as well. For example; Alcoholics have social problems at work, cause family disruption, can have financial difficulties, and let us not forget drunk driving which is the largest environmental impact on society.
