In creating Winston Smith, Orwell constructs a character who is capable of working against Big Brother –an action for which many of his comrades world be impossible. What makes it credible for Winston to word against Big Brother? In the book ‘Nineteen Eighty Four’ George Orwell has carefully constructed the character Winston Smith, so that he is capable of working against the major political party Big Brother. Winston has all the right ingredients needed to be able to avoid being sucked in by Big Brother’s propaganda, and become a victim of brainwashing. Winston is able to turn his back on the party and think independently. His position in the government system gives him an insight into how Big Brother works, and exposes Winston to all its unorthodox lies, cheats, and corruptions. Winston is aware of how Big Brother is destroying humanity, because he knew what the world was like before it came along. He has the power of knowledge, which many of his comrades don’t. He can also remember his mother, and how she loved him, at a time before Bib Brother could control it. The death of his mother had left him scarred, and bitter toward Big Brother. However Winston’s intelligent personality helps him deal with this bitterness in a smart and safe way. His dreamy personality also sets him aside from the rest of his comrades so he has the power to think and work against big brother, a crime worthy of unquestionable death.
