The Talented Mr. Ripley chronicles the life of the protagonist, Tom Ripley, as it spirals into chaos. The plot steadily quickens to a pace so fast and unpredictable that Tom becomes desperate, improvising every move while in unfamiliar territory. He uses his “talent,” or ability to mimic other people, as a way to appear to be many people at the same time. Music, especially jazz, is central to the movie. Jazz helps set the tone, from slow or smooth when Tom is under control, to fast pace and highly improvisational during times of tension or struggle. Jazz provides an appropriate accompaniment to Tom Ripley’s chaotic, improvisational way of life. The movie starts with Tom Ripley narrating, “If I could take anything back, I wouldn’t have taken that jacket.” The jacket is a Princeton jacket, the same of Dickie’s, Tom’s idol, who loves jazz. Tom must win his heart by knowing jazz and living jazz. As an accomplice, Tom follows Dickie to a jazz club where they sing merrily.
