For my coursework I will compare two poems, Gillian Clarke’s “East Moors” and Seamus Heaney’s “Digging”. Gillian Clarke is a welsh poet, she writes about welsh people and places. ... Heaney is an Irish poet, he often writes about his childhood memories and his strong agucultural roots.
The poem “East Moors” is set in South Wales in the 1980’s in Penylan. ... Clarke makes us feel sad and sympathetic for the people living in this area. ...
The poem “Digging” by Seamus Heaney describes the poets childhood in rural Ireland. ... Heaney reminisces about picking the potatoes which his father and grandfather dug up. The title “Digging” is both literal and metaphorical, in that his forefathers ‘dig’ the land but he seeks truth, knowledge and power with words. ...
In the poem Heaney shows great pride in his father and grandfather and their work ethic in these phrases:-
“By god the old man could handle a spade just like his old man”
“My grandfather cut more turn in a day than any other man on toners bog”
“Wicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods over his shoulder”
Heaney chooses not to farm the land, he is and intellectual writer and does not want to be a manual labourer.
