During everyday life, we are delimited by this immense arena we call Popular Culture. The popular culture arena has a multitude of subjects that are an integral part of our lives that most often go overlooked. Music, being a large part of our popular culture, is often viewed as merely entertainment, when there is much to be said about music and its different types. A comparison of two popular culture “texts” will uncover their semiotic meanings and how two different music genres utilize our popular culture myths, beliefs and values, and our “tools” of popular culture. By using two specific music groups, Eminem and The Dave Matthews Band, we can set off the differences of the semiotic analysis of these two popular “texts”. ... Dave Matthews Band is a more mellow and calm music, while Eminem plays up a hard-core, in your face style. Dave Matthews Band’s lyrics give off a sense of melancholy and “folk-like” music. ... Although the two groups have very different types of music, both groups comment on “life” and the idiosyncrasies that go along with “life”. Also, the reference to drug usage is also apparent in both of their music. ... Dave Matthews Band also portrays the usage of drugs and alcohol, an example of this is in their music, Grace is Gone, to drown their sorrows of life.
