Friendships and bonds are often times intensified among people who share constant danger and the threat of sudden death. In the novel, Fallen Angels, squads of soldiers fighting in Vietnam show many examples of this. Richie Perry, the narrator and main character in the novel, had several friendships, which grew so strongly he considered them family. Lieutenant Carroll, Peewee, and Monaco are all people whom Perry grew extremely close to. Lieutenant Carroll was a man who Richie Perry admired dearly. Since Perry was so far away from home, and had no one to love and care for, he began seeing Lieutenant Carroll as a father figure.
