After the horror of the Gallipoli campaign became known appeals for volunteers began in 1914. Physical standards were relaxed. Calls for volunteers continually increased. Some methods used to encourage volunteers were - wives, children and mothers were to encourage their men to enlist. - Newspapers published letters from the home front appealing for help. - Films were made to show the potentially tragic consequences of a weakened Australian army. Prime Minister Billy Huges was convinced conscription was the only answer to deliver the promised men to Britain. Leading politicians Religious leaders and some businessmen had formed the universal service league to work for the introduction of conscription for overseas service.
